LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire announced Friday the hiring of Rob Greene as the program’s new safeties coach. Greene joins the Red Raiders after two seasons at Tulane, where he helped guide the Green Wave to 20 wins and two American Athletic Conference (AAC) title appearances.
Greene will reunite with Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, with whom he previously worked at Tulane in 2023 and Wofford in 2017. The addition of Greene marks a new approach for the Red Raiders’ defensive backs unit, which will now feature specialized coaching for safeties and cornerbacks.
“Coach Greene has a strong familiarity with Coach Wood and our new defensive scheme, making him a perfect fit to join our staff,” McGuire said. “He has significant experience as both a defensive backs coach and as a defensive coordinator both from his time at Wofford and at Tulane. We’re excited to welcome him and his family to Texas Tech.”
During Greene’s tenure at Tulane, the Green Wave ranked among the nation’s best defensive units, particularly in creating turnovers. In 2023, Tulane led the AAC with 27 turnovers gained and 17 interceptions, ranking third and fourth nationally in those categories. The team also ranked:
- 16th in FBS for rushing defense (112.7 yards per game).
- 23rd in scoring defense (20.5 points per game).
- 36th in total defense (341.3 yards per game).
This season, Greene served as a defensive analyst and safeties coach. Tulane continued its strong defensive performance, tying for the FBS lead with six defensive touchdowns and ranking among the top 30 in passing yards allowed, total defense, scoring defense, and interceptions.
Before Tulane, Greene spent six seasons at Wofford, where he rose from cornerbacks coach to defensive coordinator. As Wofford’s defensive play-caller starting in 2021, Greene’s unit consistently ranked among the best in the Southern Conference in total defense, scoring defense, and rushing defense. His efforts helped Wofford secure two Southern Conference titles and multiple NCAA FCS playoff appearances.
Greene began his coaching career at North Greenville University in 2015 and later served as a defensive graduate assistant at Pittsburgh in 2016. A standout student-athlete, Greene played wide receiver at Wofford from 2010-2013, earning multiple academic honors and contributing to three NCAA FCS playoff runs.
A magna cum laude graduate of Wofford with a degree in mathematics, Greene is married to Ellie Greene, also a Wofford alumna.
