Texas Tech Promotes Darcel McBath to Cornerbacks Coach

LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire announced Monday the promotion of Darcel McBath to cornerbacks coach. This move follows the recent hiring of Rob Greene as safeties coach, splitting the defensive backs into two specialized groups under McGuire’s direction.

“I’ve been impressed with Coach McBath since his arrival on our staff this past season,” McGuire said. “He has a proven track record of developing several NFL-caliber corners in his career and will be a great asset to our entire defensive staff as we move forward. Coach McBath has a passion for this football program, and we’re excited to see him continue to excel in this new position.”

McBath, one of the most accomplished defensive backs in Texas Tech history, returned to his alma mater in August as a defensive analyst. He was elevated to cornerbacks coach during preparations for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

McBath brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having served as cornerbacks coach at Mississippi State (2020-23) and Washington State (2018-19). While at Mississippi State, McBath mentored two standout NFL cornerbacks:

  • Martin Emerson, a 2022 third-round NFL Draft pick.
  • Emmanuel Forbes, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and a consensus All-American. Forbes set the NCAA FBS record with six career interceptions returned for touchdowns.

At Washington State, McBath played a key role in the program's historic 11-win season in 2018, culminating in a Valero Alamo Bowl victory. That year, the Cougars allowed just 23.3 points per game, their lowest mark since 2003. McBath was later promoted to interim co-defensive coordinator during the 2019 season, overseeing a unit that ranked fifth in the Pac-12 for takeaways.

As a player, McBath excelled at Texas Tech from 2004-08, earning All-Big 12 first-team honors in 2008 after leading the nation with seven interceptions. He remains tied for fifth in school history with 12 career interceptions and holds two school records for single-game interceptions (3) and interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season (2).

McBath went on to play five seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the second round by the Denver Broncos in 2009. He later spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers, appearing in Super Bowl XLVII.

A native of Gainesville, Texas, McBath graduated from Texas Tech in 2008 with a degree in general studies. He and his wife, Malorie, are proud parents to two children, Ansleigh and Duke.
