LUBBOCK, TX — The No. 2-ranked Monterey Lady Plainsmen hosted the Coronado Mustangs at Monterey High School on Tuesday, January 7. Aaliyah Chavez, the nation's top-ranked player, earned a standing ovation after a 50-point performance in the Lady Plainsmen's dominant 103-42 victory.

The Lady Plainsmen wasted no time showing why they are the No. 2 team in Texas in this city rivalry, jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter. Their offense fired on all cylinders, leaving the Mustangs unable to keep pace. By halftime, the Plainsmen had built a 53-13 lead, putting the game well out of reach.
The Lady Mustangs found their rhythm in the 3rd quarter, drained several three-pointers, and held firm on defense, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap on the scoreboard. While Aaliyah Chavez continued to shine, her teammates Ambrosia Cole and Ari Johnson stepped up and took charge in the 3rd quarter, making key shots whenever Chavez was covered.
In the fourth quarter, Chavez was determined to notch another 50-point game. After a driving layup in the paint with 2:30 remaining, she waved to the stands, receiving a standing ovation before resting for the remainder of the night. Coronado spent most of the quarter taking shots against a dominant defense, and the Lady Plainsmen wrapped up the game with a 103-42 victory.
The Monterey Lady Plainsmen head north to take on the Plainview Bulldogs on Friday, January 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
