SHALLOWATER, TX — The Shallowater Fillies defeated the Idalou Wildcats Friday night in Shallowater, with both teams entering the game undefeated in district play. A couple of crucial three-pointers towards the end of the game helped seal the victory for Shallowater, moving them into the top spot in District 2-3A.
Highlights from the game are below:
A lackluster first quarter saw Shallowater and Idalou struggling early on with foul trouble. The constant stoppages led to a lot of free throws, but neither team could find much offensive rhythm. By the end of the quarter, Shallowater held a slim 6-3 lead over the Wildcats.
Carli Buckley paced Shallowater in scoring during the second quarter and kept her team in the game. Kamryn Ledbetter added in the paint, adding 2 more points for the Fillies. For Idalou, Karsyn Lutrick put up 4 points, while Preslie Wall chipped in with 5. Shallowater held a close 17-15 lead over the Wildcats at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the fight for the district spot was far from over. Both teams played tough defense, making it a grind to score. Idalou had the edge in 3-point shots, but they still trailed Shallowater by 2 points, 25-23, as they headed into the final quarter.
To finish out the game, Shallowater had to play lockdown defense and find a way to score. Fortunately for the Fillies, a handful of fouls sent them to the free-throw line, where they eventually built a 9-point lead with 2:30 left. Idalou couldn't respond after back-to-back pick-and-rolls pushed Shallowater ahead, 42-35, securing the top spot in the district.
The Shallowater Fillies take on the Muleshoe Mules at Muleshoe High School on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m.
The Idalou Wildcats head west to take on the Littlefield Wildcats at Littlefield High School on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Tip-off for that matchup is also at 6:15 p.m.
