Texas Tech Adds Top 100 Recruit Marial Akuentok

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has announced the addition of Marial Akuentok, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound center/forward from Edmonton, Ontario, Canada. Akuentok has officially enrolled at Texas Tech University and will join the Red Raiders immediately, with plans to redshirt this semester.

Akuentok, a standout prospect and top 100 recruit, brings an impressive résumé, including competing for the Canada National Team and earning a bronze medal at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup last summer. He has been reclassified from the 2025 recruiting class to join Texas Tech early.

“I love the community and the people around it,” Akuentok said of his decision to join the Red Raiders. “The coaches were amazing, honest and genuine, which made me feel welcomed and at home.  Watching their system made me visualize myself playing and producing for them. I want to develop every year so that I can be the best version of myself. I also want to win an NCAA championship and be the most dominant big man out of the Big 12.”

Akuentok played a key role in Fort Erie International Academy’s championship season last year, earning honors as co-player of the year and defensive player of the year. His performance also garnered him recognition as a BioSteel All-Canadian Player after his sophomore year. Alongside his high school success under head coach Charles Hantoumakous, Akuentok competed with UPLAY Canada and FEIA Red, further solidifying his status as a rising talent.

Before committing to Texas Tech, Akuentok received offers from several prominent programs, including Arizona State, Kansas State, Oregon, Seton Hall, and West Virginia.
