Texas Tech, which also sits at No. 25 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, is just outside the AP Top 25, receiving the most votes among unranked teams. The team is coming off an 81-71 road win over Cincinnati on Tuesday, improving to 4-0 in Big 12 road games—the best start to a conference road schedule in program history.
At home, Tech boasts a 9-2 record but is 1-2 in Big 12 home games, recently earning a 70-54 win over Arizona after previous losses to UCF and No. 3 Iowa State.
The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 with a 57.0 effective field goal percentage and a 78.2 free-throw percentage. They rank second in the conference in multiple categories, including assist-to-turnover ratio (1.63), field goal percentage (49.4), rebounding margin (7.4), 3-point shooting percentage (38.9), and points per game (82.9). The team has hit 10 or more 3-pointers in 10 games this season and averages 10.6 made threes per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12.
In conference play, five Red Raiders are averaging double figures:
- JT Toppin – 16.9 PPG (third in Big 12), 9.1 RPG (third in Big 12), second in offensive rebounds (3.43 per game)
- Chance McMillian – 12.9 PPG, 47.2 3P% (Big 12 leader), 2.33 3PM per game (10th in Big 12)
- Darrion Williams – 12.7 PPG, 15.0 PPG in Big 12 play (10th in conference)
- Elijah Hawkins – 11.9 PPG, Big 12 leader in assists (6.2 APG), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.41), ninth in steals (1.8 SPG)
- Christian Anderson – 10.1 PPG, coming off an 18-point performance vs. Cincinnati
Toppin has scored 20 points in back-to-back games, following his 20-point, seven-rebound performance at Cincinnati. He ranks third in the Big 12 with 16.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game and has recorded six double-doubles this season, including his 18th career double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds against Arizona. His six offensive rebounds in that game contributed to his Big 12 ranking of second in offensive rebounds per game (3.43).
Head Coach Grant McCasland spoke on Toppin's resurgence at his press conference on Friday.
"JT's remarkable, and you can tell the difference from how he played at home against Iowa State to how he played on the road against Cincinnati," McCasland said. "What a huge difference a week can do for you. To see him get his lift back, and he's gaining weight back from being sick. He has a different "pop" to him when he's right, and you can tell he's getting right."
Nationally, Toppin’s 9.1 career rebounds per game rank fifth among active players, and his 18 career double-doubles rank 48th—all while still being a sophomore. He has scored 20 or more points in six games this season.
McMillian, who went 3-for-6 from deep at Cincinnati, leads the Big 12 in 3-point shooting at 47.2 percent (42-for-89).
Freshman Anderson tied a career-high with four 3-pointers against Cincinnati, while Kevin Overton added 14 points with three made threes and is now averaging 9.4 PPG.
