LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech sophomore JT Toppin has been named both the Big 12 Player of the Week and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, becoming the first player in the conference this season to sweep both awards.
Toppin earned the honors after delivering back-to-back monstrous double-doubles, averaging 36.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in two dominant performances against Arizona State and Oklahoma State.
This marks Toppin’s second conference honor of the season, having previously earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on November 25.
Toppin erupted for 41 points and 15 rebounds in Texas Tech’s 111-106 double-overtime victory over Arizona State, adding three steals and two blocks.
The Dallas native followed up with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks in a 93-55 blowout win at Oklahoma State, making him the first Big 12 player to post consecutive 30-point, 10-rebound games since Blake Griffin in 2009. Over the two games, Toppin shot an efficient 74.4% (29-of-39) from the field. He is also the first Red Raider since Keenan Evans in 2018 to score 30-plus points in consecutive games.

Toppin transferred to Texas Tech from New Mexico and has been a force for the No. 9-ranked Red Raiders (20-5, 11-3 Big 12). He enters Tuesday night’s game at TCU averaging 17.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, with 10 double-doubles this season and 22 in his career.
He now has 807 career points, 517 rebounds, and 94 blocks in 57 games.
Toppin is the second Texas Tech player this season to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors, following Darrion Williams on December 23. He is also the 32nd Red Raider to win the award since the conference’s inception in 1996-97.
