Monterey Survives Late Comeback to Secure State Title Berth

ABILENE, TX — The Monterey Lady Plainsmen are headed to the state title game after a thrilling 60-57 finish over Frisco Memorial at Hardon Simmons in Abilene on Tuesday night.

Despite building a big lead at the half, Frisco battled back to take the lead in the 4th quarter. Monterey had to dig deep and overcome injuries to fight off Memorial to claim victory.

Check out the highlights from the intense 4th quarter below:

In the 4th quarter, Monterey's head coach, Jill Schneider, had a message for her team after Memorial's comeback.

"Win. Figure it out and win."

The ladies did just that. A clutch three-point shot from Aaliyah Chavez with less than three minutes to go snared the lead back for Monterey, 53-51, and the Lady Plainsmen never looked back. Down the stretch, the girls had to make free throws, and they delivered. Memorial kept up the scoring on the offensive side but could never pull back even with the Lady Plainsmen.

With one final defensive stop, Monterey claimed victory, 60-57.

"I'm just so proud we all get to experience this," Schneider said after the game.

It seems like all the pieces fell into place for this year's state title run and a last opportunity for Chavez to claim a championship. She scored 20 points in the win, fighting through double and triple-teams all evening to power her squad to victory.

Ambrosia Cole added 15 points in the Lady Plainsmen's winning effort, with Jasmine Holloway hitting two clutch threes in the first half.

Next up, Lubbock Monterey heads to San Antonio for the 2025 5A Divsion II State Championship on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m.
