Texas Tech Sweeps Houston in Opening Conference Matchup

HOUSTON, TX — The Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-11, 3-0 Big 12) completed the series sweep with an 11-1 victory over the Houston Cougars in the opening round of Big 12 play over the weekend. The Red Raiders took Game 1 on Friday 4-1, Game 2 on Saturday 13-8, and completed the sweep on Sunday.

Dylan Maxcey and Tracer Lopez powered Tech's offense on Sunday, each hitting home runs, while Zane Petty only allowed one run in the win.

The Red Raiders took control early in the 1st inning when Maxcey hit an RBI single that scored Keyler Thompson. After a walk scored another run, Tj Pompey hit another RBI single to give the Red Raiders a 3-0 lead.

Tracer Lopez stretched the lead to 4-0 later in the 2nd inning with a solo home run. The game remained 4-0 until the 3rd inning when Maxcey singled, stole second, and then advanced to third off of a throwing error. Pompey would hit a sac RBI on a deep fly ball to the warning track to score Maxcey.

Houston would score its only run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Trailing 5-1, the Cougars would never truly threaten. Maxcey continued his monster day later in the ball game with a 2-run shot to put the Red Raiders up 10-1 late. An RBI single from Lopez ended the game at 11-1.

Texas Tech remains perfect in Big 12 play and was originally scheduled to return home to Rip Griffin Park on Tuesday, March 18, against the New Mexico Lobos. However, that game has been postponed due to high winds in the forecast. Texas Tech says that the game will be made up at a later date.
