Trombello, a native of Washington, will be making his first appearance since suffering a season-ending injury during an intrasquad scrimmage in February 2024. His only previous outing in a Texas Tech uniform came last February, when he threw four shutout innings against UT Arlington.
The matchup marks the first meeting between Texas Tech (7-13, 4-2 Big 12) and Tarleton State (11-14, 0-0 WAC), despite the two programs being separated by fewer than 300 miles.
Tuesday’s contest wraps up a four-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who are playing only their third midweek game of the season. Texas Tech hosted UC San Diego for a two-game set earlier this month and had a scheduled matchup against New Mexico postponed to May 7.
The Red Raiders are coming off a competitive Big 12 series against TCU, dropping Sunday’s rubber match 9-5 in 11 innings. Texas Tech led 5-3 heading into the seventh inning but could not hold off the Horned Frogs, who scored four runs in the 11th to take the series in Lubbock.
Following Tuesday’s matchup, Texas Tech will embark on a stretch of three consecutive four-game weeks. The Red Raiders travel to Manhattan, Kansas this weekend to face Kansas State in a three-game Big 12 series, then head to Frisco for a Tuesday matchup with former Big 12 rival Oklahoma on April 1.
Texas Tech has already racked up nearly 7,400 travel miles this season and is in the midst of one of its most road-heavy schedules in recent years. The Red Raiders are slated to play just 26 of their 53 games at home this year, with road trips to seven different states on the calendar.
Despite a 7-13 overall record, Texas Tech enters the week tied for second in the Big 12 standings at 4-2 after sweeping Houston to open conference play. The series sweep marked the program’s first on the road since 2023 and snapped a 17-game road losing streak.
Texas Tech heads to Kansas State for a three-game Big 12 series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the series finale set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
