Coronado HS Names New Head Coach for Girls Basketball

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock ISD has officially announced that Katie Ferrell is the new head coach of Coronado High School's girls' basketball team.

For the past two seasons, she has served as the assistant varsity coach at Lubbock High School.

According to a press release from Lubbock ISD, Ferrell was a standout player during her collegiate career. She played four years as a starter at the University of Texas at Arlington and played in every game from 2019 to 2022, starting 98 of those. She was a key contributor in helping UTA win two Sun Belt Conference championships. She ranks in the top 10 in several major statistical categories at UTA, including second in career assists with 491.

Ferrell finished her collegiate career at Texas Tech University in the 2022-23 season. During that time, she helped lead the Lady Raiders to a 20-win season and a WNIT appearance. Her all-around game and strong defense earned her First Team All-Defense honors from Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball

She is the only Division I women’s player since 2000 to achieve over 600 points, 800 rebounds, 550 assists, 250 steals, and 100 blocks in a career.

“Katie is a true competitor and a student of the game,” said Mike Meeks, Lubbock ISD’s Executive Director of Athletics. “Her experience at every level of basketball, from high school to Division I, along with her coaching passion and defensive mindset, makes her a perfect fit for Coronado. We’re excited to see her continue to build on the strong tradition of Lady Mustang basketball.”

Before moving on to college, Ferrell was a three-time All-District player and a four-year starter at Plano Senior High School, where she helped lead her team to the 2018 Texas 6A State Championship.

As Coronado's new head coach, Ferrell is eager to bring her experience to the Lady Mustangs and help take the program to the next level.
