LUBBOCK, TX — Sophomore Garet Boehm went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the season, and freshmen Kendyl Johnson and Coleman Ryan combined for four hits and five RBIs as Texas Tech rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat Tarleton 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Down 7-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Red Raiders (8-13) erupted for four runs to get back in the game. The offensive explosion continued as Texas Tech added five unanswered runs over the next two innings to complete the comeback and secure their fifth win in the last seven games.
Boehm led off the fifth with a 415-foot home run to left-center, his first this season, to spark the rally. Johnson followed with a bunt single and a stolen base before scoring on Ryan’s RBI single down the left field line. A sacrifice fly from Logan Hughes and another from Robin Villeneuve trimmed the deficit to 7-5.
Texas Tech tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Davis Rivers, then took the lead on a two-run triple from Johnson, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Ryan followed with his second RBI single of the game to extend the lead to 10-7.
Freshman Will Jordan (1-0) earned his first career win with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two. Junior Jonny Lowe pitched the final two frames, working around traffic in both innings to notch his first career save.
The game marked the emotional return of redshirt freshman Brady Trombello, who made his first appearance since suffering a traumatic brain injury in an intrasquad scrimmage last February. The left-hander struck out four over 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned).
