AUSTIN, TX — Lubbock Christian University suffered its first back-to-back losses in over a month, dropping both games of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader to St. Edward’s on Sunday at Lucian Hamilton Field. The Chaparrals fell 5-3 in the opener and 18-11 in a high-scoring nightcap.
With the losses, LCU drops to 21-12 overall and 20-11 in LSC play.
Game 1: St. Edward’s 5, Lubbock Christian 3
St. Edward’s struck early, plating a run in the first inning and adding two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Hilltoppers (record not provided) padded their lead with back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth.
LCU starter Ryan Markwardt took the loss, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings.
The Chaparrals threatened throughout but were kept off the board until the seventh. George Hettrick scattered five hits over six shutout innings before being chased in the final frame. LCU finally broke through with an RBI single and a two-run single from Nicklaus Baumbach, but Hilltopper closer Parker Tennill recorded consecutive strikeouts to seal the win and earn the save.
Game 2: St. Edward’s 18, Lubbock Christian 11
The nightcap turned into a slugfest. LCU opened with a four-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Johnny Gomez III. St. Edward’s responded with three runs in the bottom half and erupted for six more in the second to seize a 9-4 advantage.
Baumbach homered in the third and LCU added two more in the fourth with doubles from Kade York, Shea Bowen and Brevin McCool, trimming the deficit to 9-7.
Logan Moore provided a strong relief outing for the Chaps, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to stabilize the game and keep LCU within striking distance. In the sixth, Bowen walked and McCool launched a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left center to tie the game at 9-9.
However, the Hilltoppers reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning, first scoring on a balk before Lance Little delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam. SEU added a two-run homer later in the frame to stretch the lead to 18-9.
Frayner Chavez homered in the seventh to score two more runs for LCU, but the rally fell short.
