Texas Tech Falls in 8 Innings to New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Texas Tech was unable to overcome a seven-run first inning by New Mexico, falling 15-5 in eight innings Tuesday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Red Raiders (9-20) surrendered back-to-back home runs and a two-run double in the bottom of the first, giving the Lobos (17-15) a commanding 7-0 lead before Texas Tech recorded its second at-bat. The early outburst marked the end of the day for freshman starting pitcher Connor Mohan, who faced just six batters.

Junior left-hander Zach Erdman entered in relief and helped settle the game momentarily with three innings of work, including scoreless second and third frames.

Texas Tech got on the board in the fourth when Logan Hughes doubled and scored on an RBI single by Robin Villeneuve. Antonelli Savattere followed with a single, but a pop-up and groundout ended the rally.

New Mexico’s Tye Wood, who finished the day 3-for-3 with three walks, three RBIs and four runs scored, led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to push the lead to 8-1.

The Red Raiders plated single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Coleman Ryan doubled and scored on a single by Tracer Lopez. An inning later, Lopez added another RBI single, scoring Texas Tech’s third run.

Damian Bravo nearly pulled the Red Raiders closer, launching a deep fly to center field that was caught at the warning track. Texas Tech trailed 8-3 entering the bottom of the seventh.

The Lobos put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh and three more in the eighth to invoke the run-rule and end the game.
