Senior reliever Jack Cebert has emerged as one of the Big 12’s most reliable bullpen arms. After recording two victories in last weekend’s Baylor series, Cebert improved to 4-0 in Big 12 play and now holds a 1.40 ERA in conference games, second-best in the league. Opponents are batting just .198 against him in league play.
Texas Tech rallied from an early 5-0 deficit and a 7-5 hole on Sunday to defeat Baylor, 9-8, behind a 4-for-4 day from Robin Villeneuve and a 3-for-4 effort by Antonelli Savattere. Villeneuve went 7-for-12 in the series, while Savatterre has hit .462 over the last 10 games, stepping up in place of injured Freshman All-American TJ Pompey.
This weekend’s matchup marks the first time Texas Tech and Arizona State meet as Big 12 opponents. ASU, along with Arizona and Utah, officially joined the conference last July. Tech will host Arizona next weekend.
Right-hander Mac Heuer delivered a strong start in Friday’s win over Baylor, throwing a career-high 108 pitches across six innings while striking out seven. He’ll get the ball again in Thursday’s opener.
This series marks Texas Tech’s third trip to the Phoenix area in less than a year. The Red Raiders played at ASU and UNLV to close the 2024 regular season and visited Grand Canyon University earlier this year.
Following the weekend series, Texas Tech will face Abilene Christian in a home-and-home series beginning Monday in Abilene (6:05 p.m. first pitch) and concluding Tuesday in Lubbock.
