LUBBOCK, TX — Logan Hughes celebrated his 20th birthday in the best way possible on Sunday when he racked up three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, leading Texas Tech to a 9-3 win over No. 16 Arizona. The win clinched the Red Raiders’ first ranked series victory of the season at Rip Griffin Park.
Texas Tech (15-24, 10-11 Big 12) secured its first ranked series win since defeating No. 22 West Virginia last April, holding an Arizona offense that averages nearly eight runs per game to just eight total runs across three games.
Hughes finished a triple shy of the cycle, highlighted by a three-run home run in the fifth inning that stretched a slim 4-2 lead into a 7-2 advantage. Peyton Schulze added three hits and scored twice, while Damian Bravo drove in two runs.
Starter Zane Petty (3-3) allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings before Jack Cebert entered in relief. Cebert pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts to earn the win.
After Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back two-out hits from Hughes and Bravo, the Red Raiders added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Bravo and a single by Antonelli Savattere.
Arizona (30-13, 13-8) cut the deficit to 3-2 on a two-run homer by Andrew Walton in the fifth, but Hughes’ three-run blast and a strong bullpen effort from Cebert and Lukas Pirko shut down the Wildcats the rest of the way. Pirko pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.
The Red Raiders added insurance in the eighth on a two-run double from Tracer Lopez.
Texas Tech closes a five-game homestand with a two-game midweek series against UTRGV beginning Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
