Texas Tech Dominates NMSU Behind Four Home Runs from Schulze, Hughes

LUBBOCK, TX — Peyton Schulze and Logan Hughes each hit two home runs as Texas Tech overcame a pair of early deficits to defeat New Mexico State 13-6 in a weather-delayed midweek contest Tuesday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Schulze finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored, while Hughes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The Red Raiders (17-28) trailed 3-0 and 5-3 before scoring in five consecutive innings, including three straight multi-run frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the second, Texas Tech tied the game with an RBI double from Schulze, an RBI groundout from Jace Souza, and an RBI single from Tracer Lopez. Hughes extended his on-base streak to 31 games with a hit, while Lopez pushed his hitting streak to 13 and his on-base streak to 20.

New Mexico State (22-26) reclaimed the lead in the third with a pair of two-out runs off Tech starter Connor Mohan. Tech responded with a run in the fourth and then took a 6-5 lead on Hughes’ first homer of the night — a 401-foot shot to right-center.

Texas Tech extended the lead to 8-5 in the fifth on a Dylan Maxcey RBI single and a Lopez groundout. Hughes added his second home run of the night — a 451-foot blast — to open the sixth before Schulze followed later in the frame with a two-run shot, giving Tech an 11-5 advantage.

Red Raider reliever JT Drake closed out the final two innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed. Carson Bevis earned the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings.

The game was delayed 70 minutes due to lightning in the area.

Up next: Texas Tech continues its five-game homestand Friday when it opens a weekend series against UCF. First pitch in that matchup is set for 6 p.m.
