SAN ANGELO, TX — Lubbock Christian University was eliminated from the Lone Star Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday following a pair of losses, falling 1-0 to St. Edward's and 15-3 to Angelo State at Foster Field.
The two losses dropped the Chaparrals to 34-21 on the season as they await a potential NCAA Division II tournament berth. The selection show is scheduled for Sunday at 9:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
In the opening game, it was a classic pitcher’s duel as LCU’s Ryan Markwardt and SEU’s Kobe Jaramillo both went deep into the contest. Markwardt struck out seven over eight innings, allowing one run on six hits. Jaramillo, meanwhile, pitched a complete-game shutout on 105 pitches, limiting the Chaps to five hits and not allowing a runner past first base.
St. Edward’s scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the eighth when Justin Graham executed a squeeze bunt to bring home the winning run after a single and double set the table.
In the nightcap, Angelo State struck early with a two-run home run in the first inning and steadily built its lead to 8-0 by the seventh inning. LCU responded with a three-run seventh, highlighted by Jacob Gutierrez’s two-RBI single and an RBI single from Brock Tijerina.
The Rams (41-7) quickly regained momentum, scoring six unanswered runs in the final two innings to secure the lopsided win and eliminate the Chaps from tournament play.
Lubbock Christian now sets its sights on the South Central Regional. The Chaps will take on St. Edwards on May 15 in San Angelo. First pitch is TBA.
