LUBBOCK, TX — Chelsea Hunter, a Monterey High School alumna and former collegiate assistant coach, has been named the new head girls basketball coach for the Lady Plainsmen, the Lubbock ISD Athletics Department announced Tuesday.
Hunter returns to her alma mater following the retirement of longtime head coach Jill Schneider, who capped her career by leading Monterey to a 2024 state championship and establishing a legacy of sustained success.
Hunter most recently served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Wayland Baptist University from 2021-2025. During her four-year tenure, the Flying Queens posted a 103-29 record, captured a conference championship, and made four consecutive national tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run. The program also produced six All-Americans and broke seven school records under her guidance.

“I am incredibly honored to return to Monterey, a place that shaped me both as a student and as a player,” said Hunter. “Coach Schneider left big shoes to fill, but I’m excited to continue building on the tradition of success and empowering our student-athletes to be their best on and off the court.”
In addition to her coaching experience, Hunter brings expertise in player development, recruiting, and program operations. She holds an M.B.A. in Accounting from Wayland Baptist University and a B.B.A. from Eastern New Mexico University.
“Chelsea is a dynamic leader who understands the culture and community of Monterey,” said Mike Meeks, executive director of athletics for Lubbock ISD. “Her experience at the collegiate level and her deep ties to the program make her the right person to lead the next chapter of Lady Plainsmen basketball.”
