LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech senior outside linebacker David Bailey was named to the watch list for the 2025 Lott Trophy recently, becoming one of 42 players nationally recognized for their impact both on and off the field.
The Lott Trophy, awarded annually to college football’s top defensive player, is the only major defensive honor that also considers personal character in its selection criteria. The award recognizes student-athletes who exemplify Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity—traits embodied by its namesake, Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott.
Bailey, a transfer from Stanford, enters his first season with the Red Raiders after being rated the nation’s top returning edge rusher by Pro Football Focus (PFF). He earned a 90.9 overall defensive grade in 2024 and ranked sixth among all edge rushers, just behind 2025 NFL Draft No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter.
Projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Bailey has compiled 111 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles over three seasons at Stanford. His five forced fumbles last season tied for the national lead, and his 93.2 pass-rush grade led all FBS players.
Off the field, Bailey graduated from Stanford with a degree in science, technology and society. He was named to the 2024 All-ACC Academic Team and joined Texas Tech this spring, participating in the final two weeks of practice. He will debut for the Red Raiders on Aug. 30 when Texas Tech opens its 2025 season at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
