LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has been named to the preseason watch list for the Dodd Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top college football coach.
McGuire is one of 26 coaches nationwide to be included on the list and one of five representing the Big 12 Conference, joining Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, Kansas State’s Chris Klieman and BYU’s Kalani Sitake. The SEC led all conferences with eight coaches named, followed by the Big Ten and Big 12 with five each.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, the Dodd Trophy honors an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coach whose program exemplifies success on the field while emphasizing scholarship, leadership and integrity—values associated with legendary coach Bobby Dodd.
Now entering his fourth season, McGuire is only the second coach in Texas Tech history to lead the program to bowl games in each of his first three seasons, and the first to do so with a winning record in conference play each year. Texas Tech is one of only two Big 12 programs to win at least five conference games in each of the past three seasons.
McGuire’s leadership has also produced success off the field. The Red Raiders have achieved record-high semester and cumulative GPAs under his guidance, with increased involvement in both academics and community service.
The watch list was compiled by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc., based on factors such as Academic Progress Rate (APR), Graduation Success Rate (GSR), community service, and expected on-field performance for the 2025 season. Only coaches with an APR above the national average of 969 and who are in at least their second year with their current program were eligible.
Texas Tech opens the 2025 season at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium, with coverage on ESPN+.
