Texas Tech Softball Finishes Season as National Runner-Up

 

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders softball finished as the Women’s College World Series runner-up for the second straight season following a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Texas Longhorns softball on Thursday at Devon Park.

The Red Raiders (61-10) capped a record-setting season that included program highs in wins (61), hits (679), runs (639), doubles (122) and home runs (145). Texas (53-12) secured its second consecutive national championship.

Texas Tech led 1-0 through four innings after an RBI single from Lauren Allred in the third scored Mihyia Davis, while NiJaree Canady held the Longhorns in check early.

Texas took control in the fifth inning, capitalizing on an error to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead. The Longhorns added insurance runs in the seventh on a solo home run by Kayden Henry and an RBI single from Leighann Goode.

Canady (29-7) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Citaly Gutierrez earned the win for Texas, while Teagan Kavan, the WCWS Most Valuable Player, recorded the save.

Texas Tech was limited to four hits, with Jasmyn Burns going 2-for-3. Davis and Allred each added a hit, with Davis finishing the season as the NCAA leader with 102 hits.

Canady, Davis, Kaitlyn Terry and Mia Williams were named to the WCWS All-Tournament Team.

Texas Tech, which lost 7-3 in Game 1 of the finals, dropped consecutive games for the first time this season as its postseason run came to an end.
