Texas Tech New Offensive Coordinator Mack Leftwich Talks Quarterbacks

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech Spring Football is officially in full swing, and the Red Raiders continue to work on their craft.

Texas Tech's new offensive coordinator, Mack Leftwich, is currently working with the new quarterbacks on the roster as Behren Morton continues to recover from shoulder surgery. Along with installing his new offense, he's getting a solid look at the other quarterbacks on Tech's potential roster this fall.

One returning face is redshirt freshman quarterback, Will Hammond. Through Morton's injuries last season, Hammond gained valuable playing time in multiple games.

"There's nobody in the building that prepares harder than Will Hammond," Leftwich said. "In terms of being ready for practice and learning the system, and all the things you ask your quarterback to do, he going to do those things to the umpteenth degree. I've been extremely pleased with that. He's a pro already at 19 years old."

One of the new quarterbacks next season is Frenship's own Holden Phillips. Phillips led the Tigers to the Area Round of the playoffs last season, where they lost at the final minute against the Southlake Carroll Dragons.

Phillips left high school a semester early to enroll at Texas Tech. He is a preferred walk-on and headed into next season, and he hopes to work his way up the roster in the future.

"He's been dealing," Coach Leftwich said. "He's been good. He should be at senior prom in a couple of weeks, but he came in early and picked up the system well. When the bullets start flying, he has a calmness to him. He can operate and deal the ball. So, I've been really pleased with that group."

Texas Tech continues Spring Practice through April 19, which concludes in the annual Spring Game.
