LUBBOCK, TX — Senior running back Tahj Brooks, a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award in 2023, has been named to the 2024 watch list for the award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Tuesday. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
This is the fourth watch list Brooks has been named to in the past week, joining the Maxwell Award, Wuerffel Trophy, and Walter Camp Award lists. Brooks was among the top FBS rushers last season, finishing fourth nationally with 1,538 yards.
The Doak Walker Award list also features returning recipient Ollie Gordon II of Oklahoma State and finalist Omarion Hampton of North Carolina. Brooks, Gordon, and Hampton were among the top five rushing leaders in 2023.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum will announce ten semifinalists for the award in November, followed by three finalists. The winner will be revealed on December 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards.
The Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to honor College Football's best running back throughout each season. It was named after the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner, Doak Walker, from Southern Methodist University.
According to texastech.com, the University launched a website, TahjTime.com, "to promote the Red Raiders' leading back for national awards and to track his progress towards Byron Handspard's career rushing record" at Texas Tech during Brooks' final season. Currently, Brooks has 3,055 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. He has to surpass Handspard's 4,219 yards to break the all-time rushing record at Tech.
The Red Raiders open the 2024 season at home against Abilene Christian University on Saturday, August 31. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
