Facebook CEO Admits Biden Demanded He Censor You

WASHINGTON, DC — Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted to several critical actions by Facebook (now Meta) in response to pressures from the Biden-Harris Administration and other political events. These revelations came in a letter addressed to Rep. Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, dated August 26, 2024. The letter highlights the interactions between government agencies and one of the world's largest social media platforms, particularly concerning content moderation.

Rep. Jim Jordan, a vocal critic of perceived censorship by Big Tech, summarized the admissions by Zuckerberg in a recent statement, highlighting three primary points:

Government Pressure to Censor: Zuckerberg acknowledged that senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, exerted significant pressure on Meta to censor content related to COVID-19. This included taking down humor and satire about the pandemic, leading to frustration among Meta’s teams. Although the company made its own decisions regarding what content to take down, Zuckerberg expressed regret for not being more outspoken against White House pressure.

Facebook’s Role in Content Censorship: The letter confirms that Facebook did indeed engage in content moderation and censorship. Zuckerberg mentioned that while Facebook made its own decisions, the external pressure influenced some actions, which in hindsight, he believes might not have been the best course.

Throttling of Hunter Biden Laptop Story: Zuckerberg also addressed the controversy surrounding the Hunter Biden laptop story that emerged before the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. He admitted that Facebook temporarily demoted a New York Post story concerning alleged corruption involving then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's family. This action was based on a warning from the FBI about a potential Russian disinformation operation. Zuckerberg revealed that the decision was made while waiting for fact-checkers to verify the story, which ultimately was found not to be Russian disinformation.

Rep. Jim Jordan framed these admissions as a "big win for free speech," emphasizing that they confirm long-held suspicions about the influence of government entities on social media platforms. Jordan and other members of the committee argue that these actions demonstrate a dangerous precedent where government influence can suppress speech and control the narrative on critical issues.

Zuckerberg's letter also touched on other aspects of Meta's operations in politics, including his contributions to electoral infrastructure during the 2020 election cycle. He clarified that these efforts, funded through what he called the non-partison Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, were non-partisan and aimed at ensuring safe voting during the pandemic. However, due to the controversy that followed, Zuckerberg stated he does not plan to make similar contributions in future elections, including the 2024 election.

The admissions by Zuckerberg are likely to reignite debates over the role of social media platforms in political discourse and the extent to which government entities should be involved in content moderation decisions. With the 2024 Presidential Election only a little more than two months away and early voting launching next month in some states, these issues are expected to be at the forefront of both political campaigns and legislative scrutiny.
