LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock High Westerners (0-1) host the Big Spring Steers (0-1) in the Westerners home opener at Lowery Field in Lubbock on Thursday night, September 5. Both teams fell in Week 1 and are still seeking the first win of the young season.
Last week, the Westerners traveled to Hereford to play the Whitefaces in their first game. Despite efficient offense throughout the contest, missed assignments, penalties, and turnovers ultimately doomed Lubbock High’s chances at victory. Hereford won that contest 49-28.
Westerners Head Coach Juan Rodriguez spoke on the loss to Hereford at the Lubbock ISD Football Coaches Media Luncheon on Thursday.
“We had some assignments missed last week,” Coach Rod said. “We need to trust the process and trust our keys to put us in a good situation.”
Headed into the Westerners’ home opener, Coach Rod said that there are several keys to victory.
“We definitely have to continue to move the ball like we did last week,” Coach Rodriguez continued. “We also have to be able to stop the big runs plays up the middle. Big Spring brings a heavy run game and is versatile. We have to do things right and play sound, fundamental defense."
Lubbock High looks to put those past mistakes behind them this week. Big Spring is a known opponent for the Westerners. Before Lubbock High moved back into 5A Football last district realignment, Big Spring and Lubbock were fellow 4A district mates. The Steers won the matchup against Lubbock High in 2023, 31-21
The Westerners bring a new advantage to the table this season as they look to avenge the loss from a season ago.
“I think from last year to this year, we bring depth,” Coach Rodriguez said. “We are able to have more people in positions now where people do not have to play both ways. I think that’s going to help us tonight.”
While it’s always a blessing to have athletes talented enough to play on both sides fo the football, injury concerns creep up the more time these athletes are on the field. Depth will do nothing but benefit Lubbock High moving forward, and these boys look to put that talent on display on Thursday night.
