PARIS, FRANCE – Dr. Rachael Gunn, known as “Raygun" worldwide, has surprisingly claimed the title of the world's top female breaker despite a lackluster performance at the Paris Olympics.
The Australian dancer, celebrated for her unique kangaroo-like hops, did not score at the Olympics but has ascended to the top of the world rankings, according to the latest update from the World DanceSport Federation.
Raygun’s rise to the top is thanks to her win at the Oceania Continental Championships in October 2023. Even though it was a smaller competition mostly featuring dancers from Australia and New Zealand, it offered a lot of ranking points.
Most other breakers were focused on Olympic qualification, which doesn’t impact the world rankings.
The World DanceSport Federation emphasized that Raygun's controversial Olympic performance had no bearing on her ranking. With few non-Olympic events in the past year, her Oceania win carried significant weight. However, her top position is likely temporary, as the points from the Oceania event will soon expire.
Raygun’s rise has caused quite a stir, especially since the Australian Dance Federation is under fire for a possible conflict of interest with her coach, who happens to be her husband. Despite the drama, Raygun is a fascinating figure in the breaking scene.
However, she’s likely to drop in the rankings next month when her Oceania points expire.
