LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Coronado Mustangs hosted the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs at Lowery Field on Thursday night, September 12. Coronado looked to bounce back from a loss last week to Lubbock-Cooper. The Mustangs started out strong, leading most of the first half, but could not maintain that momentum. Wylie ran away with it in the second half to hand Coronado its second straight loss, 41-12.
Watch the Game Highlights Below:
The Mustangs took advantage of an early Wylie turnover to score the first points of the contest. Coronado punted on a 4th and long, but the Wylie returner muffed the punt. The Mustangs dove on the live ball to give themselves great field position in Wylie territory at the 32-yard line. On the next play, Mustangs quarterback Villalobos hit a streaking Dom Parrish for a 32-yard touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Mustangs led 6-0.
Wylie responded almost immediately. The Bulldogs' kick returner found a lane on the kickoff and broke through the defense. He sprinted over 80 yards to the house for a touchdown. Wylie took the lead with 5:49 remaining in the 1st Quarter, 7-6.
Another takeaway from Coronado's defense allowed the Mustangs to retake the lead. Defensive Tackle Rod Humes snagged a deflected pass to set up Coronado in Abilene Wylie territory. The Mustangs then went on a march, pushing the ball ever closer to the goal line. Villalobos and Parrish hooked up for a second time for the touchdown. Another failed conversion left the score at 12-7.
Following the touchdown, the momentum completely changed. The Bulldogs would score 21 straight points to end the half. A touchdown through the air was followed up with a pooch kick that the Bulldogs recovered. Wylie drove down the field to punch it into the end zone to take a 20-12 lead with less than two minutes to play.
Coronado did not use enough time on the ensuing drive to send the ballgame to halftime and had to punt the football. Wylie took one minute to score another touchdown just before the half. The Mustangs headed into the locker room at the break, down 27-12.
Coronado's defense held up better in the 2nd half than they did in the first half. However, Wylie still managed to score two touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Mustangs' offense could not match that same intensity as the Bulldogs shut the Mustangs out at every turn.
Wylie turned to straight ball control entering the 4th quarter and never looked back. Two long possessions drained away the remaining time on the clock, and the Bulldogs claimed victory, 41-12.
Lubbock Coronado (1-2) returns to action on Friday, September 20, against Abilene Cooper. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
