Dallas Cowboys Back to the Drawing Board After Blowout Loss

FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys suffered a blowout, 44-19, loss in their home opener to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. While the loss was the last thing Head Coach Mike McCarthy and recently signed quarterback Dak Prescott needed in this young season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that the problem will be fixed.

The Cowboys' Defense allowed six; yes, count that, SIX touchdowns on the Saints' first six drives. Meanwhile, Dallas managed one touchdown and a handful of field goals. Were the Saints that great on Sunday, or was Dallas just that bad?

"The big lesson here is you can get to thinking you've got it figured out way too early in the game," said owner and general manager Jerry Jones. "We're 1-1 and we've got to learn. And this group right here has got to learn from what they experienced out there today."

On paper, Prescott’s 27/39, 293 yards, and touchdown seems like a great day, right? Well, the Cowboys signal caller also threw two picks and was sacked three times. All drive killers that the Cowboys can’t afford when the offense on the opposite sideline is torching the Cowboys’ defense.

"So extraordinarily disappointed," Jones continued. "Extraordinarily disappointed for our fans. We will correct this. We will improve from where we played out there today."

Speaking of the Dallas defense, the run defense is worse since last season. Dallas finished No. 18 against the run a season ago, allowing 115 rushing yards a game. Through two games this year, Dallas averages 144 yards per game, with 190 allowed against the Saints on Sunday. Some, including Jones himself, will say that it’s still way too early to make a judgment, but Alvin Kamara and the Saints’ O-line could do no wrong yesterday.

"This is early," said Jones. "It's very, very early, and we certainly didn't see this coming, but obviously, we've got a lot of room for improvement here. … We were able to keep our drives, had some pretty good possessions, kick some field goals, but you can't be an effective opponent in a game if you can't stop them from scoring touchdowns with every possession,” Jones concluded.

Dallas has some work to do and the road doesn’t get any easier any time soon. The Cowboys return to action against an embattled 0-2 Baltimore Ravens squad faced with a similar situation as Dallas on Sunday, September 22.

Kickoff is slated for 3:25 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
