Woman and Child Killed in Crash on US 82 Near New Mexico Border

YOAKUM COUNTY, TX — Two people lost their lives when a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu ran a stop sign and collided with a Ford F-350 towing a trailer.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Tina Ann Abbay, 35, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was driving southbound on FM 769, approaching the intersection of US 82 in Yoakum County. Abbay reportedly failed to stop at the posted sign. At the same time, Alvie Matthew Smith, 53, of Artesia, New Mexico, was traveling east on US 82, where the speed limit is 75 mph. The DPS reported that Abbay's Malibu collided with Smith's F-350.

Abbay and her passenger, a 15-year-old male from Las Cruces, were pronounced dead at the scene due to their injuries. Also in the vehicle were a one-year-old girl, a nine-year-old boy, and a 17-year-old girl, all of whom were injured and transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment.

Smith, the sole occupant of the F-350, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

DPS stated that weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash, which occurred on September 20, 2024, at 11:30 a.m.

Yoakum County is located southwest of Lubbock, near the Texas-New Mexico state line.
