Lubbock Monterey Opens District Friday Night Against Amarillo High

AMARILLO, TX — The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen open up district play at home on Friday night, September 27, against the Amarillo High Sandies. The Plainsmen just went through a gauntlet in Monterey’s non-district schedule were they finished 1-3. Despite the record, the Plainsmen are most definitely better for it, and ready to pursue a district championship.

Head Coach Judd Thrash gave his thoughts on his team so far this season and what the Plainsmen aim to do against Amarillo High on Friday night. Check out that interview below:

The Plainsmen will once again have their hands full with a talented offense that knows how to score points. Luckily for Monterey, Amarillo High doesn't have the same guy under center as Odessa High. The Sandies like to run the ball, and if Monterey can clog up the inside and force Amarillo High to pass, the pass rush should have a field day.

On offense, Amarillo High plays sound football, but it liable to give up the big play. Against the Central Bobcats in Week 2, Amarillo High led 48-14 in the 4th quarter before the Sandies gaveup 31 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to barely cling to a victory. Monterey shouldn’t depend on the big play, but there will be opportunities for it.
