Former Texas Rangers Pitcher Arrested for DWI After Crash

ARLINGTON, TX — Former Texas Rangers pitcher Matt Bush was arrested on Friday, Oct. 4, for allegedly driving while intoxicated, evading arrest with a vehicle, and causing an accident with injuries after an attempt to flee provoked by erratic driving.

According to Arlington Police, at around 8:25 p.m. on Oct. 4, officers attempted to pull over Bush on Pioneer Parkway after witnessing him driving recklessly. Instead of stopping, Bush sped away, leading to a short pursuit that resulted in a crash minutes later at the intersection of E. Pioneer Parkway and S. Collins Street in Arlington.

Investigators believe Bush ran a red light, colliding with a Chevy Silverado before striking a GMC Yukon and a Toyota Corolla that was stopped at the light. Witnesses reported that after the crash, Bush attempted to flee the scene on foot. However, bystanders quickly got involved, chasing him down and detaining him until authorities arrived.

Both Bush and the driver of the Silverado were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other drivers involved in the crash were unharmed.

Reports state that officers suspected Bush was under the influence based on his behavior and statements. He refused a roadside sobriety test, prompting police to obtain a warrant for a blood sample, which will be analyzed.

Matt Bush, 38, has a troubled history with alcohol-related incidents. His past incidents include a severe drunken driving incident in 2012 that resulted in a crash with a 72-year-old motorcyclist, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries. Bush served 39 months of a 51-month sentence for that incident before being released in 2015.

He was previously drafted No. 1 overall by the San Diego Padres in 2004 but was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays five years later due to multiple alcohol-related issues. Bush recently played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023.

According to the Arlington Police Department, Bush is being held at the Arlington Detention Center on a $35,000 bond.
