Lubbock Monterey Reignites Rivalry with Lubbock High

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock High Westerners (3-2) and Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen (2-4) reignite the Batlle for the Silver Spurs after a 2-year absence between the two storied programs. While Lubbock High has come off its best start since the early 2000s, the Plainsmen have finally found their footing.

Lubbock Monterey defeated their cross-town rivals, Lubbock Coronado, a week ago. After a close first half, explosive plays and a highly efficient run game pulled Monterey far into the lead in the second half. The 42-12 victory was a welcome sign after a string of one-score losses over the past several weeks. Monterey now turns their attention to Lubbock High, a familiar opponent, but one they haven’t played in two seasons.

Monterey will continue to rely on their pair of special running backs. Dez Williams carried the rock 13 times for 174 yards, while Kyree Baxter added 14 carries for 132 yards. The explosiveness from these two backs can turn a routine run into an explosive highlight at any point in the contest. Lubbock High proved incredibly vulnerable to the ground game against Amarillo Tascosa a week ago, and the Plainsmen are sure to take advantage.

In the passing attack, quarterback Luke Arrington continues to be effective whenever Monterey needs to gain chunks of yardage—Monterey benefits from the fact that Arrington does not turn the ball over. While the Plainsmen are a run-first offense, There will be situations where a successful run game sets up big plays in the play-action downfield.

Head Coach Thrash gave his thoughts on the matchup ahead of the rivalry game at the Lubbock ISD Coaches media luncheon. Watch that interview below:

Lubbock High and Lubbock Monterey clash at Plains Captial Park on Friday, October 11, here in Lubbock. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
