LUBBOCK, TX — The Coronado Mustangs (1-5) travel to Abilene on Friday night, October 11, to play a district matchup against the Abilene High Eagles (4-2). The Eagles currently hold first place in district play, and the Mustangs will have to play their best football to bring home a road victory.
Last time out, the Mustangs played their cross-town rivals, Lubbock Monterey. After hanging tough in the first half, Coronado could not hang with the Plainsmen and ended up with the loss. The Mustangs' road does not improve in the slightest this week against a talented Abilene High team. The Eagles filled their non-district schedule with three out of the six teams in District 2-6A. While Abilene High beat a young San Angelo Central team, the Eagles were buried by Odessa Permian and Midland Legacy.
What does that tough non-district schedule mean? The Eagles' team can play football. If Coronado isn't careful, Abilene High can turn a 2-point lead into a 25-point lead in a matter of minutes. The Mustangs defense continues to play well in every first half they've played in, but a lack of production on offense in the 2nd half continues to hold them back.

This matchup will come down to how well the Mustangs can control the ball. If Coronado does not turn the ball over, and strings together 10+ play drives, the Mustangs have a chance to win. The more Coronado keeps the Eagles' offense on the sidelines, the better their chances.
Kickoff for this matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the historic Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
