WOLFFORTH, TX — A fatal deputy-involved shooting occurred in Wolfforth on November 23 at approximately 10:17 p.m.
The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and Wolfforth Police Department responded to a report of an armed suspect threatening others at a residence in the 400 block of 14th Street.
According to a press release, authorities identified the suspect as Erskine Charles Jenkins, 20, who was allegedly armed and causing a disturbance at the residence. As officers arrived at the scene, law enforcement attempted to evacuate the residents of the home for their safety.
During the evacuation, Jenkins reportedly brandished a weapon, prompting a deputy to discharge their firearm. Jenkins was struck and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, as per department policy, stated the release.
The Texas Rangers are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and Wolfforth Police Department have deferred all further inquiries to the Texas Rangers.
