Florida Atlantic Tabs Texas Tech's Zach Kittley as Next Head Coach

BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic University is aiming to hire Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley as its next head football coach, sources confirmed Monday. At 33, Kittley would become the youngest head coach in the FBS.

Kittley has built a reputation for developing high-powered passing offenses during his time at Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, and FCS Houston Christian. Under his leadership, Texas Tech's offense ranked ninth nationally in passing this season, contributing to an 8-4 record. In 2022, the Red Raiders ranked 12th in passing offense.

Kittley gained national attention at Western Kentucky in 2021, coaching the No. 1 passing offense and No. 2 scoring offense in FBS. Under his guidance, quarterback Bailey Zappe set FBS single-season records with 5,967 passing yards and 62 touchdowns, leading to a fourth-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Florida Atlantic fired head coach Tom Herman on Nov. 18 after a 3-9 season and an 0-6 start in AAC play. Herman went 6-16 during his tenure. FAU hopes Kittley can revitalize its program with his proven track record of offensive success.

Kittley, a former basketball player at Abilene Christian and the son of longtime Texas Tech track and field coach Wes Kittley holds strong ties to Lubbock but appears poised to take on a new challenge in Boca Raton. News of FAU's interest in Kittley was first reported by On3.

This now marks the 3rd Texas Tech coach who will not be here in 2025. The Red Raiders still have a bowl game to play, and coaching duties during the bowl game have not yet been announced. Head Coach Joey McGuire has an 11-1 record during November and December as Texas Tech's head coach and looks to finish 2024 on high note in the bowl game.
