PECOS, TX — One person is dead and four others are injured following a train derailment that struck the Chamber of Commerce building in Pecos, City Manager Charles Lino announced during a Wednesday night press conference.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near Oak Street and Dot Stafford Street, according to a post on the Town of Pecos City Facebook page. The train struck a semi-trailer stuck across the tracks, according to earlier reports and videos posted on social media.
One injured individual was transported to a hospital in Odessa for treatment, while three others were treated at the scene, Lino confirmed.
Traffic Updates from Reeves County:
- Southbound traffic on Highway 285 is being rerouted to F Street and County Road 1216.
- Northbound traffic on Highway 285 will face closures at 3rd and 4th Streets.
The derailment involved three rail cars carrying hazardous materials, but no dangerous substances were released into the air, according to the city manager. “None of the cars were breached. There is no hazard to the public at this time,” Lino assured.
Further updates are expected Thursday morning, Dec. 19, Lino added.
