LUBBOCK, TX — After over three decades, Broadway Festivals Inc. announced on Monday, January 6, that it will no longer host the 4th on Broadway event.
According to a statement from BFI, the decision was made after the unexpected passing of the original organizer, Don Caldwell, in May 2024 and the organization's challenges in the past few years. The festival was a staple of Lubbock's summer tradition but will not continue in 2025 or the future.
"It's been a difficult decision for all of us at Broadway Festivals," the release said. "After careful consideration and given the obstacles we've faced, it is no longer feasible to keep the event going. We are incredibly grateful for the years of support from the City of Lubbock and our wonderful community."
Terri Caldwell, Don Caldwell's wife, shared a tribute in the press release. "He loved giving Lubbock an event where families could create memories and celebrate the talent in our city," she said. "That was his passion. I'm so proud of what he built and of how he got the entire city excited every year."
The event first began in 1991 to honor Gulf War veterans returning home. Starting as a small gathering organized by Don Caldwell and soon-to-be Mayor David Langston, it quickly grew into one of the largest free festivals in Texas. Thousands of West Texans from the South Plains area come to celebrate each year.
The festival featured a morning parade, local music performances, food vendors, and a fireworks display to cap the night off. However, rainstorms forced the cancellation of the fireworks show last year.
The future of another 4th of July celebration is not clear yet, and many Lubbockites hope the tradition will continue in some form. If people are looking for a place to celebrate, Buffalo Springs Lake offers a fantastic fireworks show on Independence Day.
"Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, and community members who made this event possible year after year," Terri Caldwell said as they celebrated 34 years.
"We will always be proud of what we built together."
