ARLINGTON, TX — After weeks of speculation following the conclusion of the 2024 NFL regular season, the Dallas Cowboys need a new head football coach. NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Andrew Groover broke the news at around noon on Monday, January 13.
According to sources inside the NFL, Pelissero and Groover said that McCarthy and the Cowboys could not come to terms on a new contract. Dallas allowed McCarthy to seek out other deals elsewhere, and the two parted ways.
McCarthy leaves Dallas with a 49-34 record, tied for the NFL's eighth-best mark during his tenure alongside the Minnesota Vikings. His time with the Cowboys included three consecutive 12-win seasons from 2021-2023, a feat not accomplished by the franchise since their Super Bowl-winning run from 1992 to 1995. However, Dallas also became the first team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to win at least 12 games three years in a row without reaching a conference championship game, fueling doubt about McCarthy’s future.
In the two seasons Dallas missed the playoffs under McCarthy, the team dealt with significant setbacks at quarterback. Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending fractured ankle in 2020 and a torn hamstring in 2024, which contributed to the team’s struggles. This year, the Cowboys finished 7-10 after a 23-19 home loss to the Washington Commanders in their final game of the season.
The Chicago Bears reportedly expressed interest in interviewing McCarthy a few weeks back, but the Cowboys denied the request to interview their former head coach. Now, McCarthy is free to pursue those avenues.
