LUBBOCK COUNTY, TX – A Lubbock man is facing multiple charges after leading a Lubbock County Sheriff's Office Corporal on a high-speed chase through southeast Lubbock with two open containers of alcohol and being caught with narcotics.
According to court documents, a Lubbock County Sheriff's Office Corporal attempted to pull over a black BMW on East Highway 84 on January 8 for speeding.
Using a speeding radar, the deputy watched the BMW travel up to 100 mph in a 65 mph zone. The corporal turned on his emergency lights and sirens to stop the car. Court reports state that the driver, later identified as 28-year-old James Lucas Johnson, accelerated to over 120 mph to evade the officer.
The chase continued eastbound on Highway 84 until the BMW reached the Woodrow Road exit near Slaton. The driver stayed on the frontage road, but the officer noticed that the BMW had started to smoke heavily.
Despite the car's mechanical issues, Johnson didn’t stop. Documents stated that he ran a stop sign at Division Street before merging back onto the highway on-ramp. During the chase on the highway, the officer saw Johnson inside the BMW throw away what looked like baggies of drugs out of the sunroof.
The BMW eventually slowed down and stopped in the main lanes of the highway. As soon as the car stopped, Johnson jumped out and fled on foot.
The officer chased after him and yelled “Sheriff’s Office” multiple times. Eventually, he caught up and tackled Johnson to the ground. Johnson tried to resist, and the Corporal hit Johnson twice with a closed fist, once on the head and once on his right thigh. After the scuffle, the Corporal got Johnson in handcuffs as backup units arrived.
While waiting for a transport vehicle, the Corporal searched the BMW and found two open beer cans in the driver's door. A further search revealed a white crystal-like substance on the back floorboard. Court reports stated the Corporal suspected it to be methamphetamine.
A field test confirmed it was methamphetamine and weighed in at 2.0 grams.
Johnson was arrested and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center, where he was booked on charges of evading arrest, drug possession, and multiple traffic violations. This arrest follows a prior arrest on January 4, when Johnson was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct involving a firearm. However, court documents did not provide further details on those previous charges.
According to his Facebook page, Johnson was a former tattoo artist and welder.
As of January 14, he had posted bond and had been released from jail.
