WASHINGTON — Donald J. Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Inauguration Day, January 20. In his inauguration speech, Trump laid out plans for changes and promised to make America stronger and reshape the country’s policies right from day one.
President Trump’s entire inauguration speech can be viewed below:
Trump stated he would sign up to 100 executive orders on his first day in office. Some of these orders were mentioned in his speech to tackle major issues like immigration, energy policy, and federal workers. He also mentioned that he would give more time for the sale of TikTok.
"The golden age of America begins right now," Trump said.
In his speech, he made it clear that he would take a strong stand on immigration, saying he would declare a "national emergency" at the U.S.-Mexico border and begin deporting criminal immigrants.
President Trump said he would create jobs by expanding drilling and imposing tariffs on foreign goods. He noted rolling back environmental policies like the Green New Deal and canceling mandates for electric vehicles.
One of his more controversial proposals was to make it U.S. policy that there are only two genders: male and female. This proposal evoked a lot of reactions during his inaugural address, especially from former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump also pledged to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," reverse Mt. Denali's name in Alaska back to Mt. McKinley after former President Barack Obama changed it in 2016, and take back control of the Panama Canal.
Trump took a moment to honor Martin Luther King Jr. since Inauguration Day also fell on MLK Jr. Day. “We will strive to make his dream a reality," he said.
At the end of his inaugural address, Trump recalled the assassination attempt he survived and stated how he believed he was "saved by God" for a bigger purpose.
"They tried to take my freedom and, indeed, to take my life," he said. "I was saved by God to make America great again."
