NEW ORLEANS, LA — Defensive dominance. That is the only way to describe how the Philadelphia Eagles manhandled the Kansas City Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday. Shutout until early in the 4th quarter, Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs' dreams of a 3-peat died in New Orleans.
Cornerback Cooper DeJean celebrated his 22nd birthday with a pivotal pick-six, while defensive end Josh Sweat led a relentless Eagles pass rush that sacked Mahomes six times—the most of his postseason career.
Philadelphia set the tone early, racking up a 24-0 halftime lead and never looking back.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards, two touchdowns and added a score on a quarterback sneak as the Eagles dominated from start to finish. Hurts scored a short TD to take the lead in the first, DeJean had the pick-six and then Hurts found A.J. Brown for a 12-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.
In the 2nd half, Devonta Smith caught a 46-yard bomb to put the game out of reach.
The Chiefs struggled all night to find a rhythm on offense. Mahomes never looked comfortable and missed several throws. Kansas City's usually potent running game was rendered moot due to the defect, and the Chiefs never managed to score outside of garbage time.
Mahomes connected with rookie Xavier Worthy for a 24-yard touchdown, but a failed two-point conversion prevented any serious momentum shift. Mahomes later found DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy again for late-game scores.
Mahomes finished his night with 226 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.
The Eagles claim their second Super Bowl Championship in franchise history with the win on Sunday. Many who wished for the Chiefs' dynasty to be over might be happy, but no one should be surprised when Andy Ried, Mahomes, and the rest of Kansas City find themselves in the hunt again next season.
