Lubbock Says Goodbye to Movie Theater After 35 Years

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock is losing one of its longtime movie theaters. After 35 years, Cinemark Southwest Lubbock Movies 16 and XD closed its doors this past weekend.

News of the closure spread quickly on social media. While Cinemark has not directly confirmed the closure, the lack of ticket sales and cars in the parking lot made it clear that the theater had closed permanently. However, Google and Cinemark's website show that the theater is "permanently closed" when the hours of operation are pulled up.

A note posted on the ticket booth windows and the front doors read, “That’s a wrap.”

When Cinemark Movies 16 opened in 1990, it was the only major theater in Lubbock. Over time, Cinemark Tinseltown, Alamo Drafthouse, and Premiere Cinemas slowly trickled into town and took business away from the theater.

The last showings were on Sunday, February 9, and after that, tickets for any movies at the location were no longer available on Fandango or through the Cinemark website.

As of February 9, the Cinemark location near 5721 58th Street is officially closed, but the Tinseltown location is at 2535 82nd Street.
