25 Residents Displaced in Early Morning Apartment Fire

LUBBOCK, TX — A fire early Sunday morning at an apartment complex left around 25 residents displaced and sent one firefighter to the hospital, says Lubbock Fire Rescue.

According to a press release, LFR responded to a 2-alarm fire at Stratford Place Apartments just after 4 a.m. A 911 call reported smoke inside an apartment unit at the complex, located at the 4900 block of 4th Street.

As firefighters made their way to the building, more calls confirmed that the situation was worsening.

When LFR arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the roof of the two-story apartment building. Crews immediately began working to extinguish the fire, with some entering the affected apartments while others evacuated residents from the building.

Firefighters located the fire and noticed early signs of a roof collapse. The fire spread quickly because of a shared attic space, said LFR.

As the fire broke through the roof, the Incident Commander called for a second alarm and switched to a defensive strategy. Firefighters used aerial operations and master streams to try to control the flames.

Air conditioning units on the roof fell through, and multiple sections of the roof collapsed.

The fire was eventually controlled, and there were no civilian injuries. Although crews were able to rescue a cat from one of the apartments, it did not survive due to smoke inhalation.

The release states one firefighter was injured and taken to University Medical Center for treatment but has since been released.

The fire displaced about 25 residents from the complex, and the American Red Cross is assisting those affected by the fire.

The responding units included Engine 7, Truck 7, Engine 13, Quint 3, Engine 4, Battalion 1, and Battalion 2 on the first alarm, followed by Engine 6, Engine 9, Truck 4, Quint 2, Rehab 2, Engine 18, Shift Chief 805, Training 841, Training 843, Air Van 7, and Gear Van 4 on the second alarm.

The LFR Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
