Shooting at Las Cruces Car Show Kills 3 Teens

 

LAS CRUCES, NM — Four people, including three teenagers, have been arrested and charged after a mass shooting at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, left three teenagers dead and over a dozen injured.

The Las Cruces Police Department said in a statement that a 15-year-old boy was arrested Sunday afternoon following the arrest of a 17-year-old earlier that day. Another 17-year-old and 20-year-old, Tomas Rivas, were arrested on Saturday. All four suspects are facing three counts of murder.

The three minors, whose names have not been released, are being held in the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center, while Rivas is being held in the adult section without bond. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with help from the FBI, ATF, New Mexico State Police, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The shooting took place on Friday night, March 21, around 10 p.m. at Young Park during an unsanctioned 200-person car show. Police responded to the scene, where they found Andrew Madrid, 16, Jason Gomez, 18, and Dominick Estrada, 19, dead from gunshot wounds. Estrada was taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center but died from his injuries.

Fifteen other people, ranging in age from 16 to 36, were also injured in the shooting.

Young Park and nearby roads were closed Saturday and Sunday as investigators worked to collect evidence. The area has since reopened.

A community assistance session for families and victims was held Sunday and will be held Monday, March 24 at the Las Cruces Convention Center.
