BOSTON, MA — Former Texas Tech right-hander Hunter Dobbins made an impressive MLB debut Sunday night, pitching five innings to earn his first career victory as the Boston Red Sox routed the St. Louis Cardinals, 18-7, in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park.
Dobbins, a native of Bryan, Texas, became the 39th former Red Raider to appear in a Major League Baseball game. He is the sixth player from Texas Tech’s 2019 College World Series team to reach the big leagues, joining Clayton Beeter (Yankees), Josh Jung (Rangers), Caleb Killian (Cubs), John McMillon (Royals) and Mason Montgomery (Rays).
The 25-year-old right-hander was called up as the Red Sox’s 27th man for the twin bill and made the most of the opportunity in front of a national audience on ESPN’s "Sunday Night Baseball."
After allowing a run on back-to-back doubles in the first inning, Dobbins settled in, ending the frame with a pickoff and his first major league strikeout. He tossed a 1-2-3 second inning, striking out the final two batters.
Boston’s offense gave Dobbins plenty of support, scoring seven runs in the second and three more in the third to build a 10-1 lead. Dobbins pitched around traffic in the fourth and fifth innings to complete his outing, recording five strikeouts while allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
Dobbins touched 97 mph on the radar gun and induced 14 swings and misses across his 87-pitch debut.
The Red Sox selected Dobbins in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He entered Sunday with a 17-16 record and 3.88 ERA over 63 minor league appearances (61 starts). He was added to Boston’s 40-man roster during the offseason.
