Lubbock Police K-9 Escapes, Attacks Two People

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Police Department is investigating an incident involving one of its K-9s that escaped from its handler’s backyard and later attacked two people.

According to a press release from the Lubbock Police Department, officers responded to reports of a dog attack in the 5700 block of 108th Street around 8:30 a.m.

During the attack, nearby residents attempted to stop the animal. One citizen shot and killed the dog to prevent further harm. The dog was later identified as a Lubbock Police K-9.

Shortly after the attack was reported, an off-duty Lubbock Police officer notified dispatch that his K-9 was missing from his yard. It was confirmed that the missing police dog was the same animal involved in the incident.

Two people were taken to University Medical Center. One person had serious injuries, and the other had moderate injuries. Lubbock Animal Services also responded to the scene.

The K-9’s handler has been placed on administrative leave while the department conducts a full internal review.

The investigation remains ongoing.
