With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Chaparrals (25-17, 24-16 LSC) are locked in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings, jockeying with West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico and St. Mary's for a potential postseason hosting opportunity.
The series continues Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader and concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to Saturday’s finale, LCU will honor its 15 graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony beginning around 12:45 p.m.
LCU split earlier series with its direct playoff seeding rivals and will need a strong closing stretch to break the logjam in the standings. The Chaps are 12-8 at home this season and boast a .376 team batting average at Hays Field, significantly higher than their .311 average in road contests.
Fifteen players will be recognized Saturday, including standout contributors such as Brevin McCool, Shea Bowen, Ryan Markwardt, and Frayner Chavez. Several have been instrumental in LCU’s offensive surge this season.
Infielder Brevin McCool enters the weekend as the national leader in home runs (23) and is among the top 10 nationally in several other offensive categories, including total bases (2nd), slugging percentage (.983, 3rd), RBIs (5th), and hits (10th). McCool set the Lone Star Conference single-game home run record earlier this season with four in a win over Angelo State.
LCU ranks among the top 10 nationally in multiple offensive categories, including slugging percentage (.575, 6th), scoring (9.7 runs/game, 9th), home runs (65, 7th), hits (485, 4th), and on-base percentage (.447, 3rd in walks). Six starters are batting at least .340, with McCool and Jacob Gutierrez both hitting over .400.
LCU’s bullpen delivered one of its strongest performances of the season last week against Eastern New Mexico, compiling a 4.08 ERA in 17.2 innings and holding hitters to a .200 average. Andrew Duran and Dakota McCaskill combined for 7.1 scoreless innings, while Alec Stanfield added 2.2 innings and three strikeouts in his best outing of the year.
The Chaps are third in the LSC in fielding percentage (.968) and have committed just 47 errors this season. In games without an error, LCU is 13-2. The team ranks No. 1 in the conference and No. 13 nationally in double plays turned with 35.
Second baseman Frayner Chavez ranks No. 11 nationally in strikeout rate at just 5.3%, striking out only six times in 113 at-bats. McCool follows with a 12.5% strikeout rate, sixth-best in the league.
LCU leads the all-time series with Cameron 22-6 and has won nine of the last 10 meetings, including a sweep in Lawton last season.
The Aggies (13-27, 13-27 LSC) enter the weekend near the bottom of the league standings and hit just .267 as a team, second-lowest in the conference. Zane Roos leads Cameron offensively with a .355 average, 11 doubles, four triples and seven homers. CU's slugging percentage of .401 and stolen base rate (.820) both rank among the bottom three in the LSC.
Lubbock Christian will close the regular season on the road next weekend, needing a strong finish to secure a top-four seed in the LSC postseason tournament.
