PLAINVIEW, TX — The Plainview Police Department is warning residents about a recent string of “virtual kidnapping” scams reported in the area.
According to a social media post, scammers are calling individuals claiming a loved one has been kidnapped and demanding ransom money. The callers often use fear tactics and personal information found online to make their threats sound convincing.
The scammers typically demand urgent payment through wire transfers, often to locations in Mexico, and insist that the victim stay on the phone without contacting anyone else.
In many cases, the scammer refuses to allow the victim to speak directly with the alleged kidnapped person.
Police say warning signs include urgent demands for money, refusal to let you speak to the supposed victim, and instructions to avoid calling the police or family members.
Officials urge anyone who receives a call to stay calm, avoid giving out any personal information, and try to contact their loved one directly.
Any suspicious calls should be reported immediately to the Plainview Police Department at 806-296-1182.
