MAMMOTH LAKES, CA — An actor known for his early work was arrested earlier this month at a ski resort in Mammoth Lakes for alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mono County District Attorney's Office.
Haley Joel Osment, 37, best known for his childhood role in “The Sixth Sense,” was taken into custody on April 8 after resort staff told responding officers he appeared extremely intoxicated after being served a single drink, later cutting him off. When confronted, Osment allegedly became agitated and uncooperative.
Body camera footage later released showed Osment resisting officers and making deragatory remarks, saying, “I’ve been kidnapped by a f***ing Nazi.” He also claimed he was “being attacked” and accused officers of “torturing me.”
Police bodycam footage shows officers finding what they believe to be cocaine residue on a $20 bill found inside Osment’s ski helmet. “I think there’s cocaine in that,” says one officer. Osment was then placed in the back of a patrol car and taken into custody.
He was transported to the Mono County Jail and booked on misdemeanor charges.
After the arrest, Osment issued a public apology, saying, “I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner.”
Osment's emotional state was due to recent personal matters, including losing his home in the LA fires earlier this year. “The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place.”
“From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage - I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me,” he added. “I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”
Osment is expected to appear in court for arraignment on July 7.
